Ahmedabad, Mar 26 (PTI) Several Congress functionaries in Gujarat on Sunday during the party’s ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ agitation against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a court in a defamation case. was taken into custody.
Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail in a case related to his remarks on the “Modi surname” and a day after the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notice of his disqualification.
Police detained state Congress chief Jagdish Thakor, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Amit Chavda and senior leader Bharatsinh Solanki along with party workers when they reached Lal Darwaza here to protest.
The protesters were taken to the police stadium where they continued to raise slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Thakor tweeted, “We have the power of truth and the resolve of Satyagraha. With the firm determination to expose the loot of BJP, to protect democracy, each and every worker of Gujarat Pradesh Congress is with Rahul Gandhi.
Similar protests were also organized in all the district headquarters of the state including Vadodara.
Vadodara Congress Party leader Rutvij Joshi said, “Before we could start the programme, the police took us into custody. We will continue to oppose the dictatorship of the BJP government, which has left behind even the British rule.”
